Do you think that composing a dissertation summary is more difficult than the actual research report?
Then you’re lucky you found us!
But before we tell you tips for composing a good dissertation synopsis, let us first tell you what it actually is.
A dissertation summary, synopsis or abstract comes at the beginning of the research report and is mainly a snapshot of your entire research work. It is usually less than 10 percent of the entire report and mostly consists of one page.
Even though it is placed at the beginning of the report, it should be the last segment to be composed so that it can consist of all the important points of a research report.
A summary needs to be an amalgamation of all the important components of your research report. To do that, you need to read your research report once again heading by heading and pick out the important points mentioned in each part. Here, you need to make sure that each of the heading of your report can be summarized in a sentence or two so that the entire summary is no longer than a page.
A good summary of dissertation consists of opinions and thoughts rather than direct quotes and references. Your report can consist of quotes and reference but the summary shouldn’t.
You may think that you have composed the best summary for your dissertation but that may not be the case when your reviewers go through it. So it is important that after you have composed the synopsis, you take feedback on it from a peer or professor.
Since the synopsis part of the report is a snap shot of your investigative work, it should only reflect the work that has been conducted in the rest of your research report rather than providing new information.
Your summary should be composed in the order that your report is written but without the headings. That means that your summary will start with the introduction, then the problem, methodology, findings and lastly the conclusion.
In conclusion, while composing thedissertation summary make sure that it is articulated to be concise and interesting so that it gives an attractive reflection of your research report.
