 – Guidelines and Exampes for Your Thesis

Don’t know how to formulate a marketing research question for your thesis or dissertation?
Don’t sweat!

Through the guidelines and examples mentioned below, you will not only be able to formulate a good marketing research question but will also be able to help your class mates with their work on the topic.

To formulate a worthwhile research question, just make sure you follow the below mentioned guidelines:

  • The scope of your market research question should be wide enough to be significant and narrow enough to be completed within limited timeframe.
  • The research question should have at least two or more variables that should be measurable.
  • The research question should be written in a clear and concise form with no subjective words that might have different interpretation for different people.

Based on these guidelines you can now compose research questions for the below mentioned types of marketing research:

  1. Product testing:
This type of research tries to determine how the product will be received in the market. How it should be packaged and presented so that it has a positive impact on the sales of a product.
    Research Question Example:
    • What is the impact of product packaging on sales?
    • How does the product placement in super markets affect its sales?
  • Customer satisfaction:
This type of research tries to determine what factors result in the satisfaction or dissatisfaction level of customers. This type of research is usually qualitative as the researchers try to determine the customers’ preferences and experiences.
    Research Question Example:
    • What is a customer’s satisfaction level towards a product that he purchases in a sale?
    • How do customer’s satisfaction surveys increase performance of service providers?
  • Product pricing:
This type of research tries to determine the impact of price changes in the sale of a product. It tries to prove relationship between the price of a product and other variables such as sales and customer satisfaction etc.

Research Question Example:

    • Does decrease in price of a luxury cars increase its sales?
    • How does increase in national petroleum prices impact the prices of fast moving consumer goods?
  • Online marketing:
Due to the rise in the awareness and usage patterns of social media tools like Facebook, YouTube and Orkut, online marketing has become one of the most popular marketing research themes. Because marketing through social media tools is cheaper than the conventional sources, many companies are now resorting towards online marketing tools for advertisement.

Research Question Example:

    • What is the impact of social media tools on sales of a product?
    • How does the Facebook impact small household businesses?
  • Distribution channels audit:
This type of marketing audit tries to determine how different members in the distribution channel affect the customers’ attitude towards the brand.

Research Question Example:

    • How does timely delivery of a product affect its sales?
    • What is the impact of warehousing and storage on usage validity of fast moving consumer goods?
